Protecting Farm Animals: Legislative Action for a Humane Future

Understanding Animal Welfare Laws

In May 2021, a Eurobarometer survey revealed that 82% of Europeans believe that passing laws to protect farm animals and promote humane farming practices is crucial. In response to this growing concern, policymakers worldwide are working to strengthen existing laws and enact new ones to ensure the well-being of farmed animals.

Council Directive 98/58/EC: A Foundation for Animal Protection

In 1998, the European Union adopted Council Directive 98/58/EC, a landmark piece of legislation that established general rules for the protection of all farmed animals. This directive outlines minimum standards for housing, feeding, water access, and veterinary care, regardless of the species. By providing a framework for animal welfare, Directive 98/58/EC has significantly improved the lives of millions of farmed animals across Europe.

Animal Cruelty Statutes and Farm Animals

In addition to EU legislation, many countries have enacted specific animal cruelty statutes that apply to both companion animals and farmed animals. These laws generally prohibit acts of animal abuse, neglect, and exploitation. While animal cruelty statutes vary in their scope and penalties, they play an important role in protecting farm animals from mistreatment and harm. However, it is important to note that these laws often do not address the specific needs and welfare concerns of farmed animals, which has led to calls for more specialized legislation.
