Dragon Boat Festival Story

The Story of Qu Yuan and the Dragon Boat Festival

A Tale of Sacrifice, Honor, and Remembrance

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Jie, is a traditional Chinese holiday that commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan, a renowned poet and statesman of the Warring States period (475-221 BC).

According to legend, Qu Yuan was a loyal official of the state of Chu. However, he was slandered by corrupt courtiers and forced into exile. In despair, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

Upon hearing of Qu Yuan's death, local villagers rowed out on the river to search for his body. In order to keep his spirit away from evil spirits, they beat drums and splashed water on the river's surface. This tradition eventually evolved into the Dragon Boat races that are now a central part of the Dragon Boat Festival.
