The Michigan State men's hockey team enters the 2022-23 season ranked first in the Big Ten preseason coaches poll.

MSU hockey received eight first-place votes and a total of 70 points in the poll, which was released on Thursday.

Ohio State, which finished second in the Big Ten last season, is ranked second in the poll with 65 points. Michigan, which won the NCAA championship last season, is ranked third with 61 points.

MSU hockey is coming off a successful 2021-22 season in which they won the Big Ten regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans are led by a number of talented players, including forwards Jagger Joshua and Daniel Russell and defensemen Christian Krygier and Nash Nahanni.

MSU hockey will open the 2022-23 season on October 1 against the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

In addition to being ranked first in the Big Ten preseason coaches poll, MSU hockey also announced four preseason honors on Thursday.

Joshua was named to the Big Ten Preseason All-Star Team, while Krygier, Nahanni, and Russell were named honorable mention.

The Spartans are hoping to build on their success from last season and make another run at the Big Ten championship and the NCAA Tournament.

MSU hockey has a tough schedule this season, but they are confident that they have the talent and experience to compete for a championship.
